Summary expansion
Questions concerning the justice of war and the correctness of leaders' decisions in battle have beset soldiers since wars began. In 1587, the city of Deventer in the Netherlands revolted against Spain and allied itself immediately with England. The Earl of Leicester was in the Netherlands and sent Sir William Stanley and his Irish regiment to guard the city. Stanley instead turned the city over to the forces of Philip of Spain. One of Stanley's officers, Roger Ashton, was troubled by this turn of events, and wrote to William Allen for advice. Ashton's letter not only queries Stanley's specific act, but broaches the underlying and pressing question of "just war." Allen responds at length and with insight in a letter writtem from Rome and dated April 20, 1587. The letters of the two men were brought together and published in English at Antwerp in 1587 (two editions), in French at Paris in 1588 (two editions), in Latin at Cracow in 1588 (one edition), and in Italian at Rome in 1587 and Florence in 1588
