Summary
First edition of an early contribution to scientific archaeology, on the excavation and reconstruction of a marble portico discovered in the Comitium (a small space bounded by the senate and the "rostra" now part of the Forum), and moved almost immediately to the Capitolio (Capitoline Hill, one of the seven hills of Rome located between the Forum and the Campus Martius).

Summary expansion
Cardinal Farnese sponsored the project, in which Marliani was assisted by Gentile Delfino. Among the finds in 1546 were fragments of Roman inscriptions published in the present work, which turned out to be official lists. The lists are transcribed in small roman capitals with oblique lines indicating missing letters. Marliani reconstructed these so that Michelangelo could set them up in the Palazzo dei Conservatori (Palace of the Conservators, a museum in the Piazza del Campidoglio on top of the Capitoline Hill in Rome)
