Note
  • Report from Edward Hyatt, Superintendent of Public Instruction in California, lamenting the squandering of resources such as soil, forests, water, and wildlife, and urging the conservation of the state's natural resources. In order to bring this key issue to "School People," Hyatt compiled the present small handbook of conservation from letters, talks, newspapers, and magazines, meant to be read, and "to give a notion of what people are thinking and saying about the subject. It is meant to attract the attention of the school people of California." Published in the wake of President Theodore Roosevelt's push for serious conservation of national resources at the federal level, and one year after the Governors' Conference in Washington met to discuss conservation issues. Many similar publications were being issued during this time, including Charles Richard Van Hise's authoritative Conservation of Natural Resources in the United States--Page 4
  • Illustrated with half-tone photographic prints and drawn illustrations, highlighting the effects of deforestion, erosion, and flooding
