The book opens with a section of poems by John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester (1647-1680), including "Of Nothing," "Artemisia to Cloƫ," "Satyr on man", "Ephelia to Bajazet," and satires from Rochester's "Imitations of Horace." There are poems by the Syracusan poet Moschus--"Fugitive love" and "Europa"--as well as John Dryden's "On the death of Oliver Cromwell" and Andrew Marvell's "Advice to a painter." Other poets whose work has been copied here include Edmund Waller ("A panegyrick on Oliver Cromwell"); George Villiers, 2nd duke of Buckingham ("A familiar epistle to Mr. Julian secretary to the muses...."); Sir John Suckling, author of the play "Aglaura," a printed page of which is mounted in the book; Sir John Harington ("Epitaph in commendation of George Turbervile"); Samuel Wesley ("Essay on heroic poetry"); and Nicholas Rowe ("Collin's complaint"). Printed poems from an unidentified edition of Elizabethan poetry are mounted on two pages; they include "Avarice" by Henry Lok; "Gray heares" by William Hunnis;" and "A dittie" by Anthony Munday, with a running title of "Poetry of the reign of Queen Elizabeth." An early edition of Select poetry, chiefly devotional, of the reign of Queen Elizabeth appeared in 1845. The owner of the commonplace book also included some poetic responses to the verse of Katherine Philips, also known as Orinda: "To the ladyes on Mrs. Philip's poems" and "To Orinda."
