Summary expansion
During the siege, the Turks, under Mustapha and Piali, were eventually repulsed and the veteran admiral Dragut was slain. This victory, under the Grand Master, Jehan Parisot de la Valette (later to give his name to Valetta) made the island and the Knights of St. John famous, and checked the advance of Mohammedan power in southern and western Europe. At the beginning, there is a short topometrical description of the island of Malta and, at the end, a gazeteer of place names
