Summary expansion
The album opens with a portrait of General Pitcher in uniform and cloak, followed by photographs of 66 graduating cadets, many of whom are wearing black armbands. One of the cadets, identified as "Fred Grant," was Frederick Dent Grant, son of President Ulysses S. Grant, who graduated with the Class of 1871. He is remembered for being one of the instigators of the racial harrassment and shunning of the Academy's first black cadet, James Webster Smith from South Carolina. There are also three group photographs of the graduates posed in front of the Academic Building (built 1839, demolished 1891). Views of the buildings and campus overlooking the Hudson River in West Point, N.Y. include the entrance gate at the road from the station; the Commandant's House; Superintendent's House; the Academic Building, with clock tower added in 1851; interiors of the library and dining hall; Ordnance Compound; boathouse and ramp; and tents on the Plain, which served as the Cadet Summer Camp where cadets were instructed in military drill and tactics. General Pitcher is pictured in one of the summer tents
