  • Published by Girolama Cartolari, one of the most productive women printers of 16th-century Italy. Between 1530 and 1537, Girolama worked with her husband Baldassarre Cartolari, first in Perugia, later in Pesaro. Established in Rome in 1540, they operated a press together until Baldassarre's death in 1543. As a widow, Girolama took over the business, and published her first work, Enea Falconi's "Tractatus reservationum papalium ac legatorum" in June 1543. She remained in business for sixteen years, until 1559, producing 135 editions in all, a mix of papal bulls, regulations of the Apostolic chamber, speeches and sermons, anti-Lutheran tracts, and the work of writers of the papal court of Paul III, and Umbrian writers such as Matteo Spinelli and Mambrino Roseo. Michele Tramezzino was her publisher for four years, although once their collaboration ended in 1547, the output of the Cartolari press declined sharply. Cf. Deborah Parker's "Women in the book trade in Italy, 1475-1620," Renaissance Quarterly 49, no. 3 (Autumn 1996): 509-541, esp. p. 527-529; and Francesco Barberi's "La tipografia romana di Baldassarre jr. e Girolama Cartolari 1540-1559," in Tipografi romani del Cinquecento. Firenze: L.S. Olschki, 1983, p. 147-163, the comprehensive bibliography of which does not include the Ghetti work
