Summary expansion
As a young boy, Longolius studied in Paris, and continued his education in Bologna and Poitiers where he then became a professor of law. By 1514 or 1515, he turned his attention to literary studies, and intent on learning Greek, settled in Rome where he became a follower of Pietro Bembo and Jacopo Sadoleto, the two most well-known Ciceronians of their time. Longolius's extreme Ciceronianism--for five years he read only Cicero, and in his own works, used only words found in Cicero--put him at odds with Erasmus. In Rome, Bembo, Sadoletus and other humanists proposed honoring Longolius with the title of Roman citizen, but Longolius was forced to flee the city under attack by opponents, and left behind the two orations in which he attempted to vindicate himself. The pamphlet may have been privately printed for the author by the Aldine press, and not printed for commercial trade
