- Summary
- Panizzi seeks to prove that the Francesco da Bologna who designed the italic type used by Aldo Manuzio, and greatly influenced typography over the past 500 years, was Francesco Francia, also called Francesco Raibolini, a connection also supported by James Wardrop in The script of humanism (Oxford : Clarendon Press, 1963). However, most authorities reject this attribution, and identify the designer of the Aldine italic as Francesco Griffo; cf. Giacomo Manzoni, "Studio primo: Francesco da Bologna, incisore di caratteri mobili metallici da stampa ... non potè essere Francesco Raibolini detto il Francia," in Studii di bibliografia analitica 1 (Bologna : G. Romangnoli, 1881)
