Summary expansion
Following its publication in 1759, Candide was banned by the Catholic Church, and included in its list of prohibited books. The prints on the first two pages of this artist's book, which the reader encounters as he opens the gatefold covers, portray Candide and Cunegonde in the "best of all possible worlds," in the castle where they grew up. The unfolding accordion pages document a history of rape, murder, inquisition, thievery, slavery, and warfare in the world of European conquest and colonization. The final central scene portrays Candide in the paradise of Eldorado, safe from the outside world, where he "cultivates his garden."
