  • Five-act Italian Renaissance commedia, adapted from Plautus' Menaechmi by Bernardo Dovizi, comedy writer appointed cardinal by Pope Leo X. It was the first comedy of note written in Italian prose, and also one of the first modern plays to include cross-dressing characters

  • Woodcuts: title within cartouche at head of t.p.; title vignette (the Giolito phoenix atop a flaming orb, monogrammed "GGF", and supported by two seated satyrs); a different version of the phoenix device on leaf 48 (phoenix left-facing into the sun, with motto "Semper eadem" and monogram "GGF"); historiated white initials
