Spec. Coll. copy: two large initials supplied in red and blue ink; alternating red and blue manuscript initials and paragraph marks; initial strokes and underlining supplied in red. Manuscript marginal notes. Bound in blind-tooled tawed pigskin beveled boards; two pairs of leather and brass catches and clasps. Large illustrated bookplate on front pastedown of book collector Edward Crawshaw ("Ex libris E. Crawshaw"), featuring interior of a library with book-filled shelves, and some books lying open on table. Crawshaw, born in Rossendale, Lancashire, prospered as a druggist and chemist in Burnley, and later moved to London where he became a manufacturer of aniline dyes; his collections of early printed books, Japanese works of art, and books on the history of Methodism were well-known, with many of them sold at auction by Sotheby in 1912 and 1920 (see the University of Leeds Special Collections page https://library.leeds.ac.uk/special-collections/collection/1444). Ownership inscription on front endleaf of H.C. Hoskier, dated Oct. 1902. In slipcase of vellum and faux-wood-grain-printed paper.
