(Gryphius' gryphon, his talons grasping a slab from which is suspended a winged orb, with motto "Virtute duce, comite fortuna"); head- and tail-pieces; ornamental initials; text illustrated with two folded leaves of maps, one of Gaul, the other of Spain (Iberia), and five three-quarter woodcuts of important places in Caesar's conquests: "Pons in Rheno" is the bridge Caesar built, allegedly in ten days, to cross the Rhine into Germania; "Avaricum", now Bourges (France) was the site of the siege of Avaricum in 52 B.C. during the Gallic War; and "Alexia" , now Alise-Sainte-Reine (France), was the scene of the most decisive event of Julius Caesar's invasion of Gaul; "Uxellodunum" was a fortified town which the Gauls attempted to defend against the Romans during Caesar's Gallic War (51 B.C.); and "Massilia", now Marseille, was the site of a siege and naval battle with the Romans during Caesar's Civil War (49 B.C.)
