Summary expansion
Each of the knights of St. Peter, of which there were some 400, purchased memberships for 1,000 fiorini d'oro, an investment, similar to a life annuity, which realized an annual return of 50 scudi. The "knights" were charged with overseeing the administration of the papal alum mines at Tolfa, north of Rome, an important source of revenue for the papal budget, as profits had been earmarked by the Lateran Council to finance a crusade against the Turks. In return, the knights received numerous privileges, including the title of Conti Lateranensi, transferable to the eldest son, and the right to dress in the colors of the papal "camerieri." List of members of the knights of St. Peter appears on leaves D3v-E1r, a large number of them from Florence. Privileges were conferred and expanded by Pope Clement VII in October 1526, and re-conferred by Pope Paul III in Feb. 1534. For additional information, cf.
