Note
  • Title, imprint statement, and series transcribed from cover. Series statement appears between title and imprint statement
  • First and last pages of text pasted to front and rear cover, respectively
  • Includes the story of Blue Beard, based on Charles Perrault's Barbe bleu, in verse (pages [1]-[6]), and prose (pages [7]-[10])
  • The two-page center plate is a color chromolithograph stage proscenium, complete with an orchestra in the pit and boxes at the sides. Inserted via string ties in the center is a chromolithographed Harlequinade of scenes illustrating the complete story as described in the text. When the pages--some of which are half pages--are turned, the characters and settings change, creating new scenes
  • "Pantomime toy books. Retail 35 cents each. Five kinds. They contain five set scenes, and nine trick changes, making fourteen transformations in all, with ten pages of descriptive letter-press or story. They are elegantly printed in colors, and the transformations are the best that have ever been devised. Fancy stiff covers in colors. Royal 8vo."--Description of series in McLoughlin Bros. catalogue for 1882-1883. In that year the series was listed among "New stock for the seasons of 1882 and 1883." The series was imitated from Dean's pantomime toy books, at least some of which were designed and illustrated by William Roger Snow (under the pseudonym "R. André")
