Early ms. notes on t.p. identifying author and imprint date. Dark brown morocco binding, signed by London bookbinders W.H. Smith (monogram "WHS" within oval on lower turn-in of lower board); five raised bans, each band carried over on upper and lower boards as a blind-stamped cluster of leaves and gold-stamped berries; gold-stamped spine title "Angelus Astrolabium. Venice. Spira. 1494"; red marbled edges. Bookplate and shelf-mark label of C.W. Dyson Perrins on front pastedown. Presentation inscription of Dr. Emilio Valtan, addressed to Dr. Elmer Belt, dated Sept. 27, 1957 in Los Angeles, Calif.

Coll. copy (with call number Z233.G44 A585a 1494): early 16th-century English binding (ca. 1510-1520) of dark brown leather over wooden boards, sewn on three large flat leather thongs visible on inside of both boards; binding reinforced with vellum leaves of ms. waste, containing text in two columns surrounded on at least three sides by commentary in a smaller script, and highlighted with red and blue initials and penwork; early ms. marginal notes on one leaf; a leaf of printed waste bound facing the t.p. has been identified as a leaf from John Anwykyll's Compendium totius grammaticae of 1483, printed by Oxford printers Theodoric Rood and Thomas Hunte (cf. Goff A-919, 920); contemporary ms. marginal notes on printed waste leaf as well; elaborate Oxford blind-tooled binding, the intersecting borders of which are decorated with rolled patterns of leaves and flowers; blind-stamped "X" in center panel, with blind-stamped leaves in each quadrant; raised bands on spine; remnants of two pairs of brass and leather clasps and closures. Cf. Strickland Gibson's Early Oxford bindings (roll 1, p. 28, plate XIX) for similar binding. From the libraries of Henry Jenkins (16th c.), Thomas Hoock (1685), and Alexandre P. Rosenberg, whose bookplate is illustrated with a pen-and-ink drawing of an open window, and monogram "APR". In modern beige cloth and tan leather clamshell box, with; gold-stamped spine label "Engel.
