The Temescal Water Company was incorporated in 1889 to supply water to the new colony of South Riverside (now Corona), which had been laid out as a citrus growing area a few years earlier by the South Riverside Land and Water Company, whose members included Samuel Merrill, R.B. Taylor George L. Joy, F.M. Choguill, and Adolph Rimpau. The Company bought up all the water-bearing lands in the area--Temescal Creek and its tributaries, and Lee Lake--and diverted all water to pipelines. Once natural springs dried up, the area became dry and desolate, and farms and orchards in the central Temescal Valley had to be abandoned; see R.L.
