Spec. Coll. copy: bound with: Aristotelis de animalium historia libri X....Francofurdi: Apud Andreae Wecheli heredes Claudium Marnium & Ioannem Aubrium, MDLXXXVII [1587]. Bound in contemporary limp vellum; fore-edges turned in; remnants of two pairs of leather ties along fore-edges; spine split. From the library of Thomas Gray, author of "Elegy written in a country church-yard," with over 400 marginal notes in his characteristic neat hand, mainly in Latin, and confined almost entirely to "De animalium;" in addition, Gray added a quotation from Buffon in French on title-page verso, extending to 17 long lines, and an index in English on flyleaf at end of the bound volume. Ownership inscriptions of Thomas Byng ("Tho. Bingus") on title page; and Nicholas Franklyn Miller, of Sandon, Hertfordshire, England, dated 1744, on front pastedown. Printed booklabel of C.K. Ogden on front pastedown. In modern red cloth phasebox, and matching red morocco and red marbled paper slipcase; gold-stamped spine title "Aristoteles. Selected works. Thomas Gray's copy with his marginal notes. 1585."
