Summary expansion
Friend and successor to Beroaldo as professor in Bologna, Pio was one of the great Italian Neo-Latin poets, and one known for immense scholarly care and acumen. Among the more interesting topics treated here are gonorrhea and the origin of Bologna. The Greek types used are entirely new, employing accents and breathings, a marked improvement over the more primitive face owned by his father Francesco de Plato or his brothers Vincenzo and Giovanni Jacopo; see R. Proctor, The printing of Greek, page 131 and figure 28. Sorbelli considered him the most important of his distinguished family of printers (Storia della stampa in Bologna...Bologna: Zanachelli, 1929)
