Summary expansion
This tinted lithograph edition is in fact an outrageous piracy of 26 of Mialhe's 30 views, plagiarized by the Havana publisher Bernardo May y Compañía in 1853. May sent Mialhe's images to Germany to be printed, collected them under the title "Album pintoresco de la Isla de Cuba," and proceeded to sell the unauthorized edition at half the cost of Mialhe's; see Cueto. In addition to the chromolithograph title-page, there are 26 tinted lithograph plates of views of Cuba, with printed captions below in Spanish, English, and German. (The second pirated edition of 1855 had 27 plates, full chromolithographs instead of tinted prints, and captions only in Spanish; in addition neither of the two maps included the pictorial borders of vignettes present in the earlier piracy.)

Note
  • Date of publication from reference sources and date on one of the maps. According to Cueto, the plates were possibly printed in Hamburg, Germany by the firm of C. Adler; see Mialhe's colonial Cuba (Historical Association of Southern Florida, 1994), pages 73-76
  • Chromolithograph title-page in colors and gold, featuring the figure of Queen Isabel I of Spain sitting on the island of Cuba looking out at the fortress of El Moro, surrounded by palm and other tropical trees, a shield bearing the Spanish royal arms, books, a globe, sea chests and barrels
  • Album includes 26 tinted lithograph plates of views of Cuba, each preceded with a leaf of guard tissue. Subjects include panoramic studies of Havana's port and views of the principal buildings in Havana, Santiago, Trinidad, Matanzas, etc., together with a number of lively genre pictures such as Carnival in "Dia de Reyes," and society girls driven in an open coach by a stylish black man in a top hat in "El quitrín."
  • Two folded lithograph maps at end: the first is "Plano pintoresco de la Habana con los numeros de las casas," signed B. May y Ca. and dated 1853; the street map of Havana is set within a pictorial border of 14 tinted two-stone lithograph vignettes of important buildings and sites of the city, including Real Cárcel y Presidio; Hospital Militar; Gran Teatro de Tacon; Catedral; Real Casa de Beneficencia, Deposito del Gas, Palacio de Gobierno, Castillo del Morro, Templete, and Fuente de la India en el Paseo de Isabel 2. The second map, "Mapa histórico pintoresco moderno de la isla de Cuba" is a detailed map of the island, within a pictorial border of 16 tinted lithograph vignettes of scenes from Cuba's history, economic development, and social life, including Toma del Morro de la Habana por los ingleses 1762; Memorable huracan de 11 de octubre de 1846; Vista de un cafatel [i.e. cafetal]; Vista de los Baños de San Diego; Juego de Gallos; El Zapateo (baile de campesinos); Vista de estancia; Vista de una vega de tabaco; and Vista de la entrada de puerto de La Habana
  • Issued in publisher's brown cloth boards; large blind-stamped decorative cartouche on both boards; upper board includes gold-stamped title "Album pintoresco de la isla de Cuba" within cartouche; green endpapers
