Summary
Album of sketches belonging to D.W.H. Skrine of Horsley Court, near Stroud, Gloucestershire and dated August 1864, with other watercolors, pencil, colored pencil, and small oil sketches added over the years, through 1920, by Skrine's eldest son, Alexander Duncan Skrine ("A.D.S."), his younger daughter Amy Edith Skrine ("A.E.S."), his sister-in-law Eliza Frances Hanham Caillard, wife of Sir Vincent Henry Penalver Caillard ("Mrs. Caillard"), and an unidentified artist "K.S." Skrine, born in 1846, was a member of the Skrine family of Warleigh Manor and Claverton House, Bath, and Horsley Court, Stroud, Gloucestershire. He attended Oxford University, and married his wife Amy Hanham on June 24, 1875. He became a coffee planter in Ceylon, and later owned and managed several tea plantations there. He was a founder of the tea company Messrs. Skrine and Co. The sketches are primarily seascapes, port and harbor scenes, gulfs, and views of the Suez Canal, no doubt painted from on board ship as the family traveled back and forth between England and Ceylon. The places identified in the drawings trace the ship route from England to Ceylon popular in the 1890s, via Marseilles, Brindisi, Malta and Gozo ("The Needles"), Gulf of Tunis, Port Said, Suez Canal, Aden, Socotra (Yemen), Red Sea, and Ceylon. Drawings of South Africa--Durban, Port Elizabeth, Cape of Good Hope--and Gibraltar, Portugal, and East London harbor outline another, more southern, route home to England. The drawings document travel between England and Ceylon during the years 1893-1894, and 1896-1897. Also included is a watercolor scene by Duncan Skrine (signed "DS P[inxit]") entitled "Fancy Ball on SS Mexican, 1897," apparently one of the steamships the family sailed on. The "Mexican" was owned by the Union Steamship Company, and sailed the South Africa-Southampton route. Scenes in Ceylon include views of Adam's Peak from the tea plantations Sunnycroft (established 1885) and Laxapana; Haputale Mountains, Badulla, Narangalla, and Chilaw Lake. The album also contains views of country homes and landscapes in Wales, St. Catherine's Rock (Wales), England, and Ireland; perhaps the family vacationed at the Livermead House Hotel in Torquay on the English Riviera, or went fishing in Banagher, or hiked near Drachenfels or the Karlsbad region of Germany, all pictured in the sketches. There are also sketches of the family homes of Hinton House, Hurst, and Horsley Court, and Skrine's "favorite beagle Ringwood."
