Summary
Commercial album produced by Hippolyte Arnoux containing photographs of the Suez Canal by the Zangaki brothers, George and Constantine, from around 1870.
Biographical or historical data
According to John Hannavy in his Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography (page 73) the French photographer, Hippolyte Arnoux, was active between 1869 and 1890 in Port Said, documented the construction and operation of the Suez Canal, and produced studies of Egyptian types in response to the popularity of orientalism. In addition to his studio in Port Said, he maintained a sailing boat moored in the canal (possibly visible in several of the Zangaki photographs as a small boat with two tall masts flying two flags), which served as a darkroom and as transportation for his equipment, painted with a legend advertising his specialty, "Photographie du Canal." On occasion he worked with Adelphoi Zangaki, the studio of the Zangaki brothers, Constantine and George, Greek Cypriots who worked in Egypt between 1870 and 1900. They toured the length of the Nile in a horse-drawn darkroom van, and like Arnoux, produced photographs of the Suez Canal. The present album, produced and marketed by Arnoux, but consisting almost exclusively of photographs by the Zangakis, appears to have been a product of such professional collaboration.

Summary expansion
The photographs are views of the Suez Canal between Port Said, the northern terminus on the Mediterranean, and Suez at the southern end where it connects to the Gulf of Suez and the Red Sea, all but one signed "Zangaki" by the firm of brothers George and Constantine Zagaki. The album opens with a shot of British ships docked at Port Said, and documents passage through the Canal with views taken at regular intervals along the length of the Canal, highlighting various sections such as the entrance at Ismailia, the curves at El Guirs and Toussoum, and the connection at Lake Timsah. Of special interest is the photo of a line of Syrian camel drivers crossing the Canal at Kantara
