Summary expansion
Photographs document streets, stores, churches, hotels, bridges, municipal buildings, and train station and harbor of Blumenau, a city in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, established by Dr. Hermann Blumenau in 1850. There are several views of Rua 15 de Novembro, the commercial heart of the city, each featuring a different commercial establishment: import/export firm of Gustav Salinger & Co.; Eugen Currlin Livraria & Importaçao; and S. Katz Fabrica de Bonbon, also visible in the photograph of the Ponte da Garcia & Hotel Holetz. Many of the buildings pictured are built in a German Hanseatic style, with pointed roofs, stepped gables, and half-timbered ("enxaimel-style") façades. Church buildings pictured include the Evangelical [Lutheran] church, and the Catholic church. The Casa dos Atiradores ("Schützenhaus") was founded in December 1859 as the Schützenverein Blumenau, a hunting and shooting club of the type that was very popular in Germany
