Summary expansion
The speech was immediately printed in three versions: the present deluxe folio edition, a quarto edition printed by Alessandro Benacci, and an Italian translation made by one of Aldus' pupils, Giovanni Francesco Costeo, also printed by Benacci. Aldo, addressing the senators of the city and his students, praises knowledge and learning in general, and the university and the city of Bologna, which he compares to Rome and ancient Athens. He goes on to celebrate illustrious citizens of Bologna, and concludes by eulogizing Pope Gregory XIII, a native Bolognese himself, and his successor Sixtus V
