Note
  • Printer identified as Giovanni Rossi, technical director for the Società Tipografica bolognese. Members of the Società were men of letters and of position in the city of Bologna, and their aims of fine printing and accurate texts were those of Bocchi's own press for his Accademia where the first edition was printed
  • Signatures: a-f4 A-Z4 Aa-Yy4
  • Last leaf ([2] p.) blank
  • Woodcuts: device on title-page of the Società Tipografica Bolognese, featuring a personification of the city of Bologna; one large historiated white initial
  • Engravings: includes 151 numbered engraved emblems; copperplates ascribed to Giulio Bonasone, after designs by Prospero Fontana and Parmigianino. In the 2nd edition all emblems are engraved, whereas the first emblem in the original was a woodcut. The Bonasone illustrations are retouched by Agostino Carracci, who had to substitute the irremediably worn-out woodblock entitled "Teschio di un bue" with another engraving of the same subject; the new printing of Carracci is more vibrant and less flat than the woodcut original and shows the first effort of the artist in the field of print; see Diane DeGrazia, La stampe dei Carracci (Bologna: Alfa, 1984), no. 1; and Albano Sorbelli, Storia della stampa in Bologna (Bologna: Zanichelli, 1929), p. 114-117
