Summary expansion
According to Carlo Pedretti in "Leonardo da Vinci: ...exhibition in honour of Elmer Belt, M.D." (Los Angeles, 1973, page 49), the text of the Trattao della pittura transcribed here was to have appeared in the first printed edition of Paris 1651, and includes copies of the drawings prepared by Nicolas Poussin preserved in MS. H 228 inf. of the Ambrosian Library in Milan. Pages 208-237 include additional chapters from Leonardo's original manuscripts in the Ambrosian Library, compiled in preparation for the first printed edition of the Treatise. Pedretti suggests that the French spelling of Leonardo's name on front pastedown, "Leonard de uincy" indicates that Raphael du Fresne may have used the present manuscript in preparing the editio princeps of the Trattato

Note
  • Includes manuscript copy of Giovanni Ambrogio Mazenta's Memorie, in which Mazenta discusses the early history of the Leonardo manuscripts, with caption title "Alcune memorie di fatti di Lionardo da Vinci e de suoi libri del P.D. Giovanni Ambrogio Mazzonta milanese chierico Regolare Minore di S. Pauolo altrimenti de Barnabiti" on [6] leaves preceding the Trattato
  • Script: written in one hand in a clear scribe's hand
  • Illustrations: manuscript includes 45 line diagrams and landscape drawings in pen, and 20 figure drawings throughout the text, apparently made from Poussin's master drawings. One folded leaf of drawings is tipped in between pages 126 and 127. Pedretti attributes the yellowish spots over the drawings to the oily paper used to trace Poussin's original drawings (page 49)
  • Binding: contemporary limp vellum binding; two pairs of soft white leather ties. Formerly owned by the Marchesa da Soragna, nata Melzi; see Steinitz. Two shelf-marks and inscription "Leonard de uincy" on front pastedown. Tipped in on front endleaf is a folded sheet containing two pages of manuscript text in a 19th-century hand, possibly written [and signed "Mb"] by the Milanese bibliophile Carlo Morbio, pertaining to Giovanni Ambrogio Mazenta's "Alcune memorie..." which precedes abbreviated version of Leonardo's Trattato della pittura. See Pedretti, page 49. Housed in modern manila phase box
