Summary expansion
The complex way in which the eight miniature fold-out books, which form the "pages" of the book, open and unfold suggests the complex meaning of the content. The book in its fully unfolded form reveals an intricate and fascinating visual pattern of information; cf. Flying Fish Press website

Note
  • Title from top of case
  • Issued in an ed. of 100 copies
  • Colophon (p. [14] of "The answer book"): "A Guide to higher learning was written and designed by Julie Chen. It was letterpress printed from photopolymer plates by Julie Chen and Alan Hillisheim. Special thanks to Kimi Taira and Elizabeth McDevitt for their steadfast assistance. There are 100 copies in this edition...."
  • The "book", housed in a dark blue clamshell box, consists of a central box surrounded on all four sides by 12 upright "pages," consisting of 8 miniature fold-out books, and 4 empty shadow boxes with clear acrylic tops. A recessed niche at the center of the box contains a small square pamphlet, "The answer book," and an 86 x 86 cm. dark blue felt cloth for displaying and reading the book folded on top. To read the book, the cloth is removed and unfolded, and the whole assembly is lifted from the tray and placed in the center of the cloth. Instructions on the inside of the lid of the clamshell box explain how to unfold the book. Each square page is numbered clockwise. The reader thus begins unfolding with page 1 on the right and continues around the structure clockwise through page 12. The bottom of the clamshell box contains instructions on how to refold the book
  • "The answer book" (a single sewn signature, 8 x 8 cm.) is placed in the center of the structure. It explains the mathematical ideas, the origami patterns of Robert J. Lang, and the Ulam spiral at the center of the book
  • "A guide to higher learning includes many elements that are highly technical in both language and concept which often go far beyond my own level of knowledge. I would like to thank the following people for their contributions to this project. Henri Ducharme and Laura Norin supplied all the mathematical formulas and equations that appear in the book and spent much time and effort trying to explain to me what they mean. The intricate patterns of lines that appear with the equations are origami crease patterns by Robert J. Lang and are used with his kind permission"--The answer book
