Summary
The oral history, organized chronologically, begins with an interview with Max Lawrence about his childhood in New York City, his business education and the evolution of his interest in literature, philosophy, politics, and the arts, and his business career. The interview with Max's wife, Rita Lawrence, covers her early years in Los Angeles and her education at UCLA, her developing interest in design, and the founding of Architectural Pottery in 1950 to produce and market the pottery container designs of students of LaGardo Tackett, professor at California School of Art. The catalogs they issued featured products for the new modern postwar styles of architecture, using new design materials, such as fiberglass. Interviewed jointly, the Lawrences discuss the history and development of their firm Architectural Pottery, and their ongoing interest in craft and design. Over the next twenty years, Architectural Pottery expanded to include various subdivisions that produced office furniture, public seating, tile, kiosks, modern dinner ware, and building signage. Major topics discussed include the Lawrences' homes designed by Gregory Ain, the social significance of the development of modern design, Architectural Pottery's innovations in design and use of materials, the growth of the company and its markets, and the rise in interest in folk art from around the world
